What is an Annuity?

An Annuity is a contract usually sold by life insurance companies that guarantees an income to the beneficiary or annuitant at some time in the future. The income stream can be very flexible. The original purchase price may be either a lump sum or a stream of payments. See Deferred Annuity and Immediate Annuity.
